The Foundation Programme is for motivated international students who want to do a bachelor’s programme at Maastricht University but still need to meet the admission requirements. The Foundation Programme will provide you with intensive training in academic skills, courses relevant to your chosen bachelor’s programme, and English language skills (depending on your level).
Outside of the classroom, the Foundation Programme offers support and organises events that will help you make new friends and adjust to life in the Netherlands. The yearlong training provides you with a unique international classroom experience specially designed for a bachelor’s at Maastricht University, the most international university in the Netherlands.

The institutional rate is for all students who have already obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree and who want to start a second programme leading to a degree at the same level or at a lower level.

Application requirements
English level
To provide proof of your English proficiency you need to obtain a minimum score on the IELTS exam (or equivalent English proficiency exam). This minimum score varies depending on the bachelor programme you will enrol in after the Foundation Programme; either a 5.5 or 6 with no sub-score less than 5.
Applicants must have a high school diploma with excellent grades. Depending on the chosen bachelor's programme, specific subject requirements can apply (e.g. mathematics, physics, biology or history).
Mathematics
All our students, regardless of their chosen track, need to pass at least the basic Foundation Programme mathematics course. Having successfully taken mathematics in high school is therefore necessary.
