Urban Governance: Resilient & Smart Cities
Short or summer course

This course focuses on strategies, frameworks and tools to strengthen cities’ resilience to absorb and recover from any shock or stress coming from outside and inside while adapting to maintaining its essential functions.
In consultation with international experts, the first part of the course is designed to blend theoretical debates with practical experiences, real-life scenarios, as well as group works to examine cities vulnerabilities across territories. The discussions are designed to help you answer the following questions: To what must cities be resilient? How can cities, as complex systems adapt and, be resilient? How can cities finance resilience? How can cities innovate by making use of open data to enhance resilience?
The course blends classroom discussions with study visits to the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water, Province of South Holland, The Hague Municipality, Amsterdam Urban Ecosystem, and Rotterdam Global Adaptation Centre to offer practice-oriented learning, but importantly to ensure that participants gain practical knowledge from the Dutch best practices as highly encouraged in the UN 2030 urban agenda.
