Crisis and Security Management: Terrorism and Political Violence
Master

In the specialisation Terrorism and Political Violence of the MSc Crisis and Security Management you study one of the most urgent security challenges of our time: terrorism, extremism and political violence. You will examine the roots, dynamics and consequences of radical and extremist movements, from jihadist groups to right-wing and anti-government extremism. The programme highlights how extremist thinking shapes both violent attacks and non-violent strategies, such as conspiracy theories that fuel polarisation and destabilise democratic societies.
You will gain insight into the psychological underpinnings of extremist ideologies, the processes of radicalisation, and the role of de-radicalisation and disengagement initiatives. The courses combine theory and practice, enabling you to critically assess real-world cases, explore state and societal responses, and reflect on the effectiveness of counter-terrorism policies.
The specialisation prepares you for careers in security research, intelligence analysis, risk assessment, policing, governance, or policy development. Through research-led teaching, case studies and guest lectures, you will develop the academic and analytical skills needed to understand and address the evolving threat of terrorism and political violence worldwide.
