Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology
Bachelor
Anthropology is about people. About how we live together, what we value, and how we respond to change.
Why Anthropology at VU Amsterdam?
From climate and migration to inequality and identity: you learn to understand social issues from within. As an anthropologist, you explore the world in all its complexity. You understand how culture, power, and identity shape each other - and how this becomes visible in policy, media, organisations, and everyday life. You build bridges between people, perspectives, and worlds.
At VU Amsterdam, Anthropology goes beyond theory: you shape the kind of anthropologist you want to become.
- Choose a profile that matches your ambitions. Are you a researcher, practitioner, or creative professional? In your first year, you explore all three. In your second year, you decide which path to follow and how you want to graduate: by writing an academic article, a policy report, or producing a documentary or podcast.
- Combine with another discipline. You can combine Anthropology with media and journalism or religion, building expertise in two fields.
- Do fieldwork in the Netherlands or abroad. Through our partnerships with universities and organisations in Colombia, you can do fieldwork there.
