Energy Harnessing in the Urban Water Cycle
Short or summer course
Water and energy are fundamentally interconnected — energy is required to extract, treat, and distribute water, while water is essential for producing and sustaining many forms of energy. Managing these two critical resources in an integrated way is key to achieving sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change and urban growth. This calls for professionals who can adopt a dual perspective, understanding both the water and energy dimensions of modern infrastructure systems. As the global demand for sustainable resource management continues to rise, so too does the need for experts who can navigate the complex interdependencies between these sectors.
Despite this growing importance, MSc-level education focusing on the technical aspects of the Water–Energy nexus remains very limited worldwide. Academic programs often treat water and energy as separate disciplines, leaving a gap in interdisciplinary training. This course is designed to fill that gap by providing participants with the knowledge and analytical tools to understand, assess, and optimize interactions between water and energy systems.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme of study. Its aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken by mobile students through the transfer of credits. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits are equivalent to the workload of full-time student during one academic year.
