During the master in Europe 1000-1800 at Leiden University you will focus on the momentous cultural and political transformations that characterised Europe between 1000-1800. Explore the history of Europe across a range of areas, particularly the Habsburg world, or specialise in the history of the Low Countries during a period when it was one of Europe’s major commercial, cultural and political hubs.

Learn from leading scholars

The programme is taught by inspired academics currently engaged in large-scale research projects on issues directly related to the master in Europe 1000-1800, including feuds and factions, the Burgundian nobility, war memories and identity formation. They will teach you how to think comparatively about the transformations in politics, culture and religion that took place during 1000-1800. You will also engage closely in current scholarly debates, honing your ability to analyse and critique the latest academic ideas and theories.

Access to unique resources

During your studies you will be able to benefit from the easy access to the excellent library and archival resources available in Leiden and The Hague, where you can study many primary sources and secondary studies. You will learn how to conduct quality research and develop the skills to write your own, independently researched MA thesis.
