How Migration Really Works: Exploring the Myths and Realities of Migration
Short or summer course
This course explores the complex and multifaceted processes that shape global migration patterns, policies, and experiences. Drawing on Hein de Haas’s influential book, “How Migration Really Works,” students will examine the structural causes of migration, including economic, social, political, and environmental factors. The course critically analyses misconceptions about migration, investigates the roles of migrants and societies, and discusses contemporary challenges and policy responses. Through interdisciplinary perspectives, students will develop a nuanced understanding of migration as a dynamic and integral component of global change.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme of study. Its aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken by mobile students through the transfer of credits. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits are equivalent to the workload of full-time student during one academic year.
