Modelling Coastal Hazards
Short or summer course
Coastal communities worldwide are increasingly threatened by erosion, flooding, and sea-level rise. Addressing these challenges requires experts who can accurately model and predict coastal hazards. The Modelling Coastal Hazards short course is a highly practical program designed to equip participants with the skills to simulate complex coastal processes and apply state-of-the-art tools to real-world problems.
The course emphasizes hands-on learning using leading open-source software widely adopted in both academia and professional practice. Participants gain practical experience with:
- Delft3D Flexible Mesh (FM): for regional hydro-morphodynamic modelling
- XBeach: for simulating nearshore storm and hurricane impacts
- ShorelineS: for modelling long-term shoreline evolution
This year, the course also introduces the basic principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and pattern recognition using global remote-sensing data, demonstrating how data-driven approaches can complement traditional coastal models.
Motivating Context
Understanding and modelling coastal change is essential for designing sustainable and nature-based interventions.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a programme of study. Its aim is to facilitate the recognition of study periods undertaken by mobile students through the transfer of credits. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits are equivalent to the workload of full-time student during one academic year.
