More than 50% of the world’s population lives in cities and this will increase to 70% in the coming decades. This master's specialisation in Regional and Urban Economics explores the economic forces that shape regions, cities, and neighbourhoods.

You will dive into important questions such as:

  • Why do people and businesses concentrate in certain areas?
  • What makes some cities grow while others shrink?
  • How can economic theory help us understand and address urban challenges like crime, segregation, traffic, and pollution?
  • What happens to buildings and infrastructure when cities expand or decline?
  • How does spatial planning influence a cities’ ability to develop?
  • And what are the benefits and trade-offs of investing in sustainable, 'green' buildings?

What makes this specialisation unique is its clear connection to real estate and land, both essential to understanding the dynamics of cities and regions. It therefore explores the sharp rise in property prices in many cities in recent years, and the social and economic problems this can create—from housing affordability issues and inequality to displacement due to gentrification and reduced access to jobs and services.
