The course aims to reduce the global number of wastewater treatment facilities that fail prematurely due to inappropriate technology selection, high running costs, or overlooked operational and maintenance needs.

Learning is highly practical. Participants apply their knowledge in guided group exercises, selecting the most appropriate treatment train for a fictive community while considering investment and operational costs. Once a treatment train is chosen, groups proceed to process and engineering design, including preliminary sketches of a full-scale plant layout.

Throughout the course, participants collaborate, debate, and defend their designs in front of a panel on the final day. The learning experience is further enriched with a field visit to a local wastewater treatment facility.
